Ask Yourself these Questions: <\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>SEO management of your e-commerce products gets complicated when you come across <strong>out-of-stock products that are no longer returning<\/strong>, usually because they are discontinued.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And before deleting them, there are other <strong>actions you can take to avoid losing the SEO work done<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Which ones you choose depends on your answer to this first question:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>&gt;&gt;&gt; Is there an equivalent product for that out-of-stock product, or not? &lt;&lt;&lt;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If that other alternative has similar characteristics to the one you&#8217;re missing, and you think the user won&#8217;t mind it being from another brand (or another season, as happens a lot in fashion), you can make a <strong>301 redirect<\/strong>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Of course: include a <strong>message where you warn them of this change<\/strong> to avoid any feeling of confusion that it generates by taking them to a different reference.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And if your answer to the question above is that <strong>you don&#8217;t have a similar product<\/strong> to give the user an alternative\u2026 <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It&#8217;s time to ask <strong>more questions and analyze data<\/strong> to know how to manage that URL:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Does the out-of-stock product have organic traffic<\/strong>? Check it in Google Analytics or <a href=\"https:\/\/chartud.io\/en\/blog\/the-best-alternatives-to-google-analytics\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">any alternative.<\/a> <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Does it rank for keywords in top positions? <\/strong>Check the position, clicks, and impressions in <a href=\"https:\/\/chartud.io\/template\/search-console\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Google Search Console<\/a> or with a tool like SEranking or DinoRANK.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Does it have conversions?<\/strong> Again, <a href=\"https:\/\/chartud.io\/template\/google-analytics-4\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">use Google Analytics<\/a>. To maintain it (and continue capturing that traffic), you have two options: <\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Redirect via a 301 to a higher-level category URL<\/strong>. For example, if an online <em>gadget<\/em> store discontinues a wooden spatula model and there is no other similar one, it can redirect to the higher category of kitchen spatulas. <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Keep the product page<\/strong> (therefore, in code 200) but include a message of its lack of stock, the reason, and the link to the alternative, whether it is the higher category or related products.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p>If the opposite happens (the URL barely has traffic, positioning, and authority), then <strong>you can choose to make a 410 redirect<\/strong>, which tells the search engine spiders that that page is not available nor will it be again. <br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-table\"><table class=\"has-fixed-layout\"><tbody><tr><td>\ud83d\udca1Remember that the only URLs that should appear in your sitemap are those that have a status code of 200. The rest, whether with 301 or 410, you should not include them.
