It can help to <strong>filter charts and metrics<\/strong> in a very effective way. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>These are the <strong>predefined filters<\/strong>, which we apply from the buttons. But you want to see it first from Organic Search, then from Paid Search, then from another channel like Referral&#8230;  <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The <strong>easiest and fastest way<\/strong> to do this is through predefined filters and control buttons.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So you understand, a <strong>button can have several actions<\/strong>:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Navigation through pages or link to an external page.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Actions in reports (I&#8217;ll talk about it later).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Apply a filter.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"381\" height=\"217\" src=\"https:\/\/chartud.io\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/04\/boton-looker-studio.webp\" alt=\"looker studio button\" class=\"wp-image-3289\" srcset=\"https:\/\/chartud.io\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/04\/boton-looker-studio.webp 381w, https:\/\/chartud.io\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/04\/boton-looker-studio-300x171.webp 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 381px) 100vw, 381px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:15px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>The moment a button triggers a filter, all the charts in a report or the charts in a group will be filtered based on what you have configured in the filter. And when you want to stop filtering, just press the button again. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>I can think of more uses to give these buttons to filter:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Filter by Devices.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Filter by Countries.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Filter by Pages: filter by those pages that have a specific content in the URL.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Filter by type of queries in <a href=\"https:\/\/chartud.io\/data-source\/google-search-console\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">reports with Search Console data<\/a>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Separate branding keywords from non-branding keywords in <a href=\"https:\/\/chartud.io\/en\/template\/seo-dashboards\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">SEO reports<\/a>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"216\" src=\"https:\/\/chartud.io\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/04\/supasnap-2024-04-04-10.24.16-1024x216.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-3292\" srcset=\"https:\/\/chartud.io\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/04\/supasnap-2024-04-04-10.24.16-1024x216.png 1024w, https:\/\/chartud.io\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/04\/supasnap-2024-04-04-10.24.16-300x63.png 300w, https:\/\/chartud.io\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/04\/supasnap-2024-04-04-10.24.16-768x162.png 768w, https:\/\/chartud.io\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/04\/supasnap-2024-04-04-10.24.16-1536x324.png 1536w, https:\/\/chartud.io\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/04\/supasnap-2024-04-04-10.24.16-500x105.png 500w, https:\/\/chartud.io\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/04\/supasnap-2024-04-04-10.24.16.png 1694w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\"><em>Example of buttons to filter by channels: Organic Search, Paid Search and Direct + a button to clear filters.<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>These are just some ideas.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Now, how are they created?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center has-medium-font-size\" style=\"border-style:none;border-width:0px;border-radius:10px;margin-top:13px;margin-right:13px;margin-bottom:13px;margin-left:13px;padding-top:0;padding-right:0;padding-bottom:0;padding-left:0\">\ud83d\udc49<a href=\"https:\/\/chartud.io\/en\/blog\/amazing-free-and-paid-looker-studio-templates\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>Check out our selection of Looker Studio templates<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:25px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Create and Configure your First Button with a Predefined Filter in Looker Studio<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The first thing you should keep in mind is that you need to create a dimension of <a href=\"https:\/\/es.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Tipo_de_dato_l%C3%B3gico#:~:text=El%20tipo%20de%20dato%20l%C3%B3gico,normalmente%20representan%20falso%20o%20verdadero.\" target=\"_blank\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/es.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Tipo_de_dato_l%C3%B3gico#:~:text=El%20tipo%20de%20dato%20l%C3%B3gico,normalmente%20representan%20falso%20o%20verdadero.\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">boolean type<\/a>, that is, that responds to \u201ctrue\u201d or \u201cfalse\u201d. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If you want to filter by a specific country, for example, the custom field must indicate a specific country so that it is met or not and thus filter the charts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Let&#8217;s go with the steps you must follow:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Add a <strong>Button<\/strong>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>In the Button Settings, choose <strong>\u201cFilter\u201d<\/strong> as the Button action type.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>In Control Field, go to <strong>\u201cAdd field\u201d<\/strong>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Create the <strong>Custom field<\/strong>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Once created, it will already be applied to the button.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>You can configure whether true or false is applied by default.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Configure if you want to create a group of button filters. If you don&#8217;t want to, leave it as it is.  <\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p>I am going to go into detail in point 4, 6 and 7.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Point 4: Create the Custom Field.<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Go to create <strong>Custom field:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"389\" height=\"424\" src=\"https:\/\/chartud.io\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/04\/crear-campo-personalizado-1.webp\" alt=\"create custom field looker studio\" class=\"wp-image-3293\" srcset=\"https:\/\/chartud.io\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/04\/crear-campo-personalizado-1.webp 389w, https:\/\/chartud.io\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/04\/crear-campo-personalizado-1-275x300.webp 275w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 389px) 100vw, 389px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:15px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>What I use the most and what I have found most useful is the <em>CONTAINS_TEXT<\/em> expression.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"451\" height=\"307\" src=\"https:\/\/chartud.io\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/04\/crear-campo-personalizado-2.webp\" alt=\"contain text custom field looker studio\" class=\"wp-image-3294\" srcset=\"https:\/\/chartud.io\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/04\/crear-campo-personalizado-2.webp 451w, https:\/\/chartud.io\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/04\/crear-campo-personalizado-2-300x204.webp 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 451px) 100vw, 451px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:15px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>This expression is used to indicate if something we specify is within a text. For example: <\/p>\n\n\n\n<pre class=\"wp-block-preformatted has-white-color has-cyan-bluish-gray-background-color has-text-color has-background has-link-color wp-elements-8979fd93d71bb884810b8b990929aada\">\u200b<code>CONTAINS_TEXT(Pa\u00eds,\"Spain\")<\/code><\/pre>\n\n\n\n<p>This custom field would filter the charts giving data only from the country \u201cSpain\u201d. If I don&#8217;t press the button with that filter, the data will not be filtered. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Another example:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<pre class=\"wp-block-preformatted has-white-color has-cyan-bluish-gray-background-color has-text-color has-background has-link-color wp-elements-9663b29cf270b4326f5a38fd8b88c0b6\">CONTAINS_TEXT(Session default channel group, \u201cOrganic Search\u201d)<\/pre>\n\n\n\n<p>In this case we filter by the channel that contains \u201cOrganic Search\u201d, using the Google Analytics 4 data source.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Why don&#8217;t I just put \u201cOrganic\u201d? Remember that in GA4 there is a channel that is \u201cSocial Organic\u201d. Therefore, it would also include data from that channel and I only want \u201cOrganic Search\u201d.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You could also use other functions such as ENDS_WITH, REGEXP_MATCH, STARTS_WITH, REGEXP_CONTAINS&#8230;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/support.google.com\/looker-studio\/table\/6379764?hl=es&amp;ref_topic=7570421&amp;sjid=17190988323156754978-EU\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Here is the complete list of functions.<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You can use REGEXP_MATCH, for example, to filter by a specific section of a website or all the URLs that contain something you indicate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<pre class=\"wp-block-preformatted has-white-color has-cyan-bluish-gray-background-color has-text-color has-background\">REGEXP_CONTAINS(Page path, \u201cblog\/\u201d)<\/pre>\n\n\n\n<p>To show data only from pages that contain \u201cblog\/\u201d (with GA4).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<pre class=\"wp-block-preformatted has-white-color has-cyan-bluish-gray-background-color has-text-color has-background\">REGEXP_CONTAINS(Page path, \u201c\/product-category\/\u201d)<\/pre>\n\n\n\n<p>To show data only from the pages in whose path \u201c\/product-category\/\u201d appears (GA4 data). For example, for a specific category of products. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And you can create several buttons with different filters:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Button group 1:<\/strong> Organic Search | Paid Search | Direct | Paid Social | Referral | Email | Organic Social<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Button group 2:<\/strong> Spain | France | United States | Germany | Japan<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Button group 3:<\/strong> Blog | Product category 1 | Product category 2 | Product category 3 | Product category 4<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>With these groups of buttons you can c<strong>licking to filter all the data<\/strong> from a page of a Looker Studio report or one or more graphs, using the graph groups.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Point 6: You Can Configure whether True or False is Applied by Default.<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>This point of the configuration of the calculated fields is simple. It is about whether the predefined filter of the button is applied automatically (true) or not applied. If you leave it disabled, it will not be applied.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"362\" height=\"93\" src=\"https:\/\/chartud.io\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/04\/supasnap-2024-04-04-10.30.13.webp\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-3296\" srcset=\"https:\/\/chartud.io\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/04\/supasnap-2024-04-04-10.30.13.webp 362w, https:\/\/chartud.io\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/04\/supasnap-2024-04-04-10.30.13-300x77.webp 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 362px) 100vw, 362px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:15px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Point 7: Configure if You Want to Create a Group of Button Filters<\/strong>.<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>This option is really useful. Imagine you have the buttons of Button group 1 that I have indicated above. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"365\" height=\"106\" src=\"https:\/\/chartud.io\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/04\/grupo-filtros-botones.webp\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-3295\" srcset=\"https:\/\/chartud.io\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/04\/grupo-filtros-botones.webp 365w, https:\/\/chartud.io\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/04\/grupo-filtros-botones-300x87.webp 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 365px) 100vw, 365px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:15px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>If I click on Organic Search, everything is filtered by that filter. If I then click Paid Search, it is added to the already applied filter of Organic Search and this is not what we want. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em><a href=\"https:\/\/chartud.io\/en\/template\/seo-dashboards\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>Discover our SEO reports<\/strong><\/a><\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>One option is to click again on \u201cOrganic Search\u201d to deactivate it, and then activate \u201cPaid Search\u201d but another much better option is to resort to a group of filters.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You simply have to put the same number to the buttons that you consider to be in the same group, for example we assign \u201c1\u201d to all the buttons in group 1. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This way when I click on a button and then click on another, they alternate, they will never be pressed at the same time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter size-large is-resized\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/media.giphy.com\/media\/v1.Y2lkPTc5MGI3NjExMmR1aW9tM3dvanI5ZHdxMDBpdXp1NjF5ZjltMjMzamFhOW5ycW5iMSZlcD12MV9pbnRlcm5hbF9naWZfYnlfaWQmY3Q9Zw\/2TJwqYbEbBcwxvxqDQ\/giphy.gif\" alt=\"\" style=\"width:678px;height:auto\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:15px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Very useful!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Another option that you can use if you do not want to resort to the filter groups, or even to apply at the level of an entire page is to create a button whose Action Type is <strong>Report actions &gt; Clear filters.<\/strong> By clicking this button, all filters are reset. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We could say that it is equivalent to the button of <strong>\u201cReset\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As you can see, it is not complicated to create predefined filters in Looker Studio.
