to Create Annotations in Looker Studio"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>As of September 2025, Looker Studio doesn\u2019t let you create annotations directly on charts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Annotations are super useful for marking key events, issues, or anything you want to keep visible in a time series. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>They work great in <a href=\"https:\/\/chartud.io\/template\/seo-dashboards\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">SEO dashboards<\/a> or <a href=\"https:\/\/chartud.io\/template\/google-analytics-4\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Google Analytics reports.<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"493\" possible. <a href=\"https:\/\/chartud.io\/template\/search-console\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">In Google Search Console<\/a>, you can add them using tools like <strong>Make it tool<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I don\u2019t know if Google will add annotations to Looker Studio dashboards in the future (hopefully yes), but for now, we need a more \u201cmanual\u201d way to do it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The good news: it\u2019s possible by combining data sources.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And yes\u2014you\u2019ll also need a Google Sheet.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Don\u2019t worry, I\u2019ll walk you templates<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong><strong>Step 1: Create a Google Sheet<\/strong><\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>In the spreadsheet, add each annotation or milestone as a row.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>One row = one annotation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You can update this Google Sheet anytime, and since it\u2019s connected to Looker Studio, your dashboard will update automatically when you add or edit rows.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In this example, there are 2 columns:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Date<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Annotation<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>I\u2019m using Google updates for SEO as annotations, but you can use it for <em>Text<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The first column (<strong>Date<\/strong>) must be formatted as <em>Date<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:15px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><br><strong>Step 2: Add Data Sources to Looker Studio<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>In the report where you want annotations:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol start=\"1\" class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Add the Google Sheets source (the one you just created).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Add the main data source you want to annotate (Google Search Console, GA4, Google Ads, etc.).<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p>Use the native Google Sheets connector, and make sure your fields are set as <strong>Date<\/strong> and blend<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Your blend should look like this:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Table 1<\/strong>: Main data source (GA4, GSC, etc.)\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Dimension: <em>Date<\/em><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Metrics: Clicks, Impressions, Sessions, etc.<br><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Table 2<\/strong>: Google Sheets source\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Dimensions: <em>Date<\/em> and <em>Annotation<\/em> (here called \u201cIncident\u201d).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Set the join condition to match <strong>Date<\/strong> on both tables.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Choose \u201cLeft outer\u201d as the join type.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Name the blended data source and save it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure Annotations<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Now add a time series (line chart).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Settings:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Data source: the blended one you created<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Dimension: Date<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Metric 1: the metric you want to analyze (Clicks, Sessions, Conversions, etc.)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Metric 2: your annotation field (\u201cIncidents\u201d \u2192 renamed \u201cUpdates\u201d)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Date range: e.g. last 16 months for GSC history<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Interactive charts: turn on \u201cCross-filtering\u201d<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:15px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img 5: Create a Table for Annotations<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Let\u2019s add a table to make analysis easier.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The table has 2 columns (dimensions):<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol start=\"1\" class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Date<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Annotation (\u201cUpdate\u201d or \u201cIncident\u201d)<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p>Apply the same date range as your chart.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Enable \u201cCross-filtering.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1000\" height=\"600\" \u201cnull\u201d (dates without annotations).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To fix that, add a filter:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Exclude \u2192 Annotation dimension \u2192 is <strong>Cross-filtering<\/strong>, you can:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Click an annotation bar in the chart \u2192 table filters to that annotation.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Click an annotation row in the table \u2192 chart filters to that annotation.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>This makes analysis much easier.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:15px\" aria-hidden=\"true\"
