How to Add the Percentage of the Total in Looker Studio and Google Analytics 4?

It is one of those things that are missed in Google Analytics 4 compared to Universal Analytics, and it is not understood how it is not currently available.

This is the percentage that a value represents within the total when we talk about specific metrics.

For example: if you are analyzing Sessions by Acquisition Channels, and you know that you have 15400 sessions from Organic Search…

What percentage of the total Sessions does that channel account for?

We automatically had this in Universal Analytics, but we don’t have it in Google Analytics 4.

There are two ways to make it visible again so that the analyses you do in your Google Analytics 4 reports are more convenient.

1. Vitaminizing your Tables in Looker Studio

This is something you can do in Looker Studio with any data source, not just Google Analytics 4.

In Chartud we also use it a lot in Google Ads templates or in SEO dashboards.

For example, to know the percentage of the total that a specific URL represents in terms of Search Console Clicks, or the same but in the case of a Google Ads campaign or ad group.

It is about creating a new column in a Looker Studio table-type chart where you can see the share that metric has.

Table with the % of total sessions represented, in this case by Channel Group.

To achieve this you must do the following:

1- Add the same metric right after the metric you want to get the percentage of the total from. That is, put the same metric twice.

2- Edit the second metric. Click on the pencil icon and change “Data type” to Percentage:

Now in “Comparison calculation” choose Percentage of total> Relative to the corresponding data

Now you will have the metric showing the percentage of the total:

As you can see it’s simple and you can apply it in a few clicks.

Think about how it can help you beyond this example and try to apply it.

With a Chrome Extension that Adds it in GA4

If in addition to having it in Looker Studio you want to have it in Google Analytics 4 I have good news.

There is a Google Chrome extension that adds the percentage directly in the GA4 tables.

Of course, you can only use it for this tool and not for others such as Google Search Console or Google Ads, or any other data source.

This is the GA4Fixer extension and one of the functions it has is to add the % of the total in the reports. That easy.

ga4 fixer

Either of these two ways are good to always have this important element when analyzing and drawing conclusions from our reports.

I use both. I always have the extension installed and I make the modification that I have mentioned in the Looker Studio templates.
